The Rising Cost of Raising Two Children in 2025
Raising children in the United States has become significantly more expensive, and new 2025 estimates reveal just how costly parenthood has become. The latest national analysis shows that raising two children from birth through age 18 now totals $645,819, reflecting substantial increases in childcare, housing, food, transportation, and other essential expenses.
This estimate was calculated using the Economic Policy Institute’s Family Budget Calculator, which compares the annual expenses of a two-adult household with and without children. Key categories include housing, food, transportation, taxes, and other basic needs.
To account for early childhood, additional costs for center-based care were included:
- 1 year of infant care
- 3 years of toddler care
- 1 year of preschool
For school-aged children, the analysis incorporated:
- 7 years of before- and after-school care (ages 5–12)
- 4 years of summer care (ages 12–16)
All costs were adjusted to June 2025 dollars using the Consumer Price Index to reflect current living expenses. With 78% of survey respondents saying raising two children is part of their American Dream, today’s total makes clear that parenthood carries a steep financial commitment.
Cost of College for Two Children in 2025
The cost of higher education continues to rise faster than inflation. The most recent figures show that sending two children to a public, in-state university now requires an estimated $230,273.
This amount is based on national averages from the U.S. Department of Education, which lists the annual cost of attendance—tuition, fees, and room & board—at $27,146 per year. Adjusted for four years and two students, and updated using the CPI for education, the total continues to climb each year. College expenses have risen nearly 5% annually over the past two decades, outpacing most other household costs.
Although about 20% of students use loans or receive financial aid, families planning to pay out-of-pocket face a large and rapidly growing financial challenge.
Total Cost of Raising Two Children Through College
When combining the cost of raising two children with the cost of sending them to college, the total in 2025 reaches $876,092, up from $832,172 in 2024. This nearly $44,000 increase in just one year highlights the accelerating financial pressures on American families.
From basic childcare to long-term educational expenses, the path from birth to college graduation represents one of the largest lifetime financial commitments for families—one that continues to expand alongside inflation and rising service costs.
