Argentina Crowned Copa América Champions Once Again
Argentina has lifted the Copa América title, defeating Colombia 1–0 in a tense and emotional final held in the United States. The winning goal came from Lautaro Martínez at the 112th minute of extra time, sealing a well-deserved victory for the Albiceleste.
Despite losing team captain Lionel Messi in the 66th minute due to an ankle injury, Argentina created numerous scoring opportunities and remained the superior side throughout the match.
A Delayed Final Marked by Tension Outside the Stadium
The final was played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, but kickoff was delayed for more than an hour. Clashes between Colombian and Argentine supporters outside the venue forced security to intervene before the match could begin.
Argentina entered the tournament as the defending champion—having won the 2021 edition in Brazil—and once again proved its dominance on the continental stage.
A Record-Breaking 16th Copa América Title
With this victory, Argentina becomes the most successful team in Copa América history, reaching 16 titles and surpassing Uruguay’s 15 wins.
Before Lionel Scaloni became head coach, Argentina had endured decades of frustration, failing to win a major trophy since 1993 and losing several painful finals, including:
- 2014 World Cup Final
- Copa América 2015
- Copa América 2016
Under Scaloni, everything changed. Argentina won:
- Copa América 2021
- World Cup 2022
- Finalissima 2022
- Copa América 2025
In the 2025 tournament, Argentina conceded only one goal in six matches, confirming its status as the overwhelming favorite.
Di María’s Emotional Farewell to International Football
The match also marked the 145th and final appearance for Ángel Di María, one of Argentina’s most influential players of the past two decades—second only to Messi in impact and legacy.
Colombia, entering the final on an impressive 28-match unbeaten streak, proved to be a tough opponent, but ultimately could not withstand Argentina’s pressure in extra time.
What’s Next for Lionel Messi?
Although Messi suffered an ankle injury during the final, his international future remains open. Now playing for Inter Miami in MLS, the 38-year-old forward is expected to decide whether he will compete in the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in:
- United States
- Canada
- Mexico
Fans around the world are eager to see whether the legendary captain will extend his international career for one last global tournament.
